‘Graphic design internship’ pays $8,000 to a local graphic designer
Graphic design internship pays $18,000 a year to a London-based graphic designer, according to an article published on the website of the National Association of Graphic Design Interns (NAGIDI).
The NAGIDi is a group of graphic designers, designers, photographers and other professionals that has been lobbying for the creation of graphic design intern programs in the UK for several years.
“We have been calling for such an internship since the 1980s,” NAGIDA’s Executive Director, David Wainwright, told RTÉ.
“I think we are in the final stages of having a working proposal for a graphic design internship in the coming weeks.”
The concept was first mooted in 2010, but it is not known how many interns were initially employed.
“It’s a bit of a mystery,” said Wainnington.
“What does a graphic designer have to do to get an internship?
How much does it cost?”
The graphic design industry is booming in the United Kingdom, with more than 1,500 full-time and part-time positions available to professionals in the industry, according the Institute for Business Research.
According to the latest figures from the British Association of Students and Employers (BAUSS), the graphic design and web design industries in the country contributed nearly €20 billion ($22.7 billion) to the UK economy in 2015.
While graphic design internships have been around since at least the late 1990s, it is only recently that graphic design is beginning to gain traction in the creative sector.
The National Association for Graphic Design (NagIDI) says the average salary for a junior graphic designer in the U.K. is €9,800 ($10,900) a year, but there is also a $6,000-a-month “graphic designer stipend” which can be given to interns to help pay for their own accommodation.
“In the U, there’s no provision for internships,” Wainwritt said.
“So, a graphic designers stipend is not available in the way that it’s available in many other countries.”
There’s no formal qualification in the profession, so we’re looking at what we can do to attract and retain talented people.
In the past, internships were a key recruitment tool for graduates, but the number of designers now entering the industry has dwindled due to competition from cheaper alternatives such as design consultancy and social media marketing. “
If you’re looking to be a graphic artist, graphic designer or interior designer, it’s very hard to get into these roles,” Wainswright said.
In the past, internships were a key recruitment tool for graduates, but the number of designers now entering the industry has dwindled due to competition from cheaper alternatives such as design consultancy and social media marketing.
“The main reason we’re seeing such a decline in the number is because designers are no longer being hired as a primary source of employment,” said NAGIDS Executive Director Ian McClelland.
“This is also changing the way designers are employed.
They are working on websites, designing websites.
And now they’re working in the social media world.”
NAG IDs research has also shown that the number and quality of internships has decreased, despite the increase in the size of the profession.
“There’s not a lot of people applying to internships anymore,” said McClels.
“But there are people out there who are getting in on the action.”
While the graphic designer internship can be a great opportunity to get a job as a freelancer, it does have drawbacks, said Wainswier.
“Internships are expensive, and I think we’re starting to see some of the issues that we’ve talked about come to the fore in terms of the lack of pay and the lack, in the case of designers, of a real training component,” he said.
NAG IDI is calling on the government to pass a law that will allow graphic designers to get paid.
“Designers have a fundamental right to work for the good of society,” said James O’Neill, executive director of the NAGIS.
“They have a right to live and work and to learn, and that’s why we want to see these internships introduced in the next few years.”
