When Will You Get Paid for Graphic Design?
The answer to that question may surprise you.
A study by the consulting firm ABI Research, published today, finds that graphic designers who create visual content for a living will receive an average of $2.2 million in salary, with a median salary of $1.5 million.
And the study found that graphic design professionals in creative roles are among the highest paid in the industry, averaging $4.2 per hour.
The median pay for graphic designers in creative jobs was $2,750, according to ABI.
But that wage is slightly higher than the $1,600 median salary earned by designers in marketing roles, according a survey of nearly 500 people who work in creative and media industries.
The median salary for graphic design jobs is a bit higher than what graphic designers earn at other industries, according the ABI study.
The top 25 highest-paid graphic designers at a median hourly wage of $8.4 million earn $4,700 more per hour than other professionals in similar positions.
In other words, designers who have mastered graphic design, which includes design, illustration, design consulting and other creative fields, are more likely to earn more than their counterparts in other fields, according ABI’s research.
But even for those who have the expertise to produce creative work, the median hourly salary is lower than the median income for graphic art, which is typically $9 an hour, according an industry analysis by the New York Times.
The study also found that the median wage for graphic artists was slightly higher at $4 an hour.
And graphic design is a job that pays well, and the median salary is above what a designer with the same experience can make in a year, said Paul K. Rabe, senior vice president and general manager at ABI Design, which published the study.
The highest median income among graphic designers was earned by graphic designers with more than 25 years of experience, the study said.
Rabe said that the average salary for the highest-paying positions is $4 per hour, while the median is $1 an hour for the lowest-paying jobs.
But he added that there is plenty of room for advancement, especially as designers work in larger teams.
“The number of designers in graphic design has exploded in recent years,” Rabe said.
“I think there’s a lot of opportunity to grow and thrive as designers in this industry.”
Rabe pointed out that while there is a lot going on in the creative world, a lot more needs to be done.
“There’s a shortage of designers and engineers, and that needs to change,” he said.
