Graphic Design Contest Ends After Contest Ends In Crisis
NEW YORK — The annual Graphic Design Competition in New York City has ended amid an escalation of the deadly wildfires raging through the state.
More than 2,200 people have been killed and thousands have been evacuated since Sunday when the National Guard was activated to contain the blaze.
On Monday, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said the National Park Service will reopen on Thursday.
The agency has issued a mandatory evacuation order for all communities in the county, which includes the city of Buffalo.
Andrew Cuomo has called on all state agencies to immediately begin implementing the state’s emergency declaration, saying the fires have “created significant disruption to daily life, including transportation and communication.”
A new evacuation order also has been issued for the surrounding New York metropolitan area.
In an interview with ABC News’ This Week on Sunday, Cuomo said it is “a really big deal” to have all of New York’s public parks and beaches closed and that it is a “real emergency.”
